Nalî

Father of Sorani Poetry · Poet of Baban · 1797 – 1855 CE — Mullah Khidir ibn Ahmad, known as Nalî, was a Kurdish poet from the Şehrezûr region of Başûr Kurdistan. He is regarded as the founding father of classical Sorani Kurdish poetry and the foremost poet of the Baban court.

Historical Overview

  • Rise to Power: Born in the village of Xak in Şehrezûr, he studied the Islamic sciences in Silêmanî, Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo. He spent much of his life moving between Silêmanî, Jerusalem, and Damascus, becoming a companion of the Baban princes and composing odes in their honour.
  • Achievements: He was the first to compose classical Sorani verse on a level rivalling Persian and Arabic poetry. His Dîwanî Nalî contains love poems, panegyric, and elegies, and established the prosodic conventions of Sorani verse still in use today.
  • Significance to the Kurds and Medes: Nalî is to Sorani what Cizîrî is to Kurmanji. Without him the Silêmanî poetic school — which would later produce Mehwî, Salim, Goran, and Şêrko Bêkes — could not have come into being. His Dîwan is the cornerstone of all modern Sorani literature.
